Richmond Nature Park goes to the birds
Birds came out in flocks to the Richmond Nature Park for food and water during the park’s A Day for the Birds event last Sunday.
“We are trying to encourage people to feed birds in their gardens,” said Richard Kenny, an assistant at the Richmond Nature Park.
Kenny took people of all ages on tours throughout the day, showing them the nature park’s bird feeding station and talking to them about how they can set up smaller feeding stations outside of their homes.
“We just want to encourage people to feed birds in their garden and enjoy them,” he said.
Guests were able to get a close-up look at a variety of birds including sparrows, woodpeckers and chickadees.
“The birds have really become accustom to people,” Kenny said.
“They pretty much ignore us,” he said.
The event is held in the winter despite the cold weather because it is especially important to provide birds with a clean food and water supply during the coldest months of the year.
For those who did not want to brave the outdoors the nature park recently installed a camera that allows people to experience the birds feeding at the park from inside the nature house. Richmond Nature Park is located at 11851 Westminster Hwy. at No. 5 Road.
