Cannery celebrates Torch with free admission

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is celebrating the Olympic torch’s arrival in Steveston by dropping its admission charge from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 9.

Visitors can check out the new exhibit on the Hong Wo General Store. Ling Chung Lam, who arrived in Canada in 1881, built the store in Richmond. The name “Hong Wo” means “living in harmony.”

Lam stocked his store with hardware, clothing, dry goods, vegetables, fruit and meats. It also boasted one of Steveston’s first telephones. Lam also grew his own potatoes, beans, cucumbers and cauliflower on Richmond farmland.

The Lam family operated the store from 1895 to 1971. It stood empty until 1977 when the City of Richmond demolished it.

On Tuesday the cannery will also offer crafts and activities for the kids. The cannery is located at 12138 Fourth Ave. in Steveston.
