Clarke on NCAA pre-season freshman team
Summer Clarke has received her first honour as an National Collegiate Athletic Association athlete—and her college soccer career hasn’t even kicked off yet.
The 18-year-old Richmond soccer sensation, who will begin pre-season training with the Louisiana State University Tigers Aug. 6, is one of 11 rookies nationwide selected to the Pre-season All-Freshman Team.
The Tigers are the No. 1-ranked team in the Southeast Conference and No. 13 in the NCAA for 2013.
“During the evaluation process, our staff rated Summer the top striker in North America for the Class of 2013,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee.
Clarke, who most recently led the Vancouver Whitecaps girls’ elite team to the Gothia Cup title in the under-19 division on July 20 in Gothenburg, Sweden, has developed into one of the world’s most feared strikers at the youth level with her experience in the Canadian women’s national team system at the under-17 and under-20 levels. She was the leading scorer for the U-17 Canadian team during the 2012 season, which included setting a national record with six goals with her effort at the 2012 Confederation of North, Central American & Caribbean Association Football Women’s Under-17 Championships en route to Canada’s berth in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Clarke started three of four matches during the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan a year ago, scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout of Columbia.
